Do you ever feel like you are better than the average karaoke singer? Were you aware that there is a karaoke world championship?

The Karaoke World Championships is a serious competition that originated in Finland in 2003, and featured 7 countries. The first year also saw the UK win both categories, with Uche Eke winning the male category and Danni Cadby winning the female.

This competition has caught on with the rest of the world and in 2007 the amount of countries competing jumped to an impressive 30 and was hosted in Thailand. In December 2005 Thailand hosted a fund raising event called Karaoke World Championships Light up the Night in aid of the Tsunami appeal. At this event the top 5 male and female champions of that year performed in front of the princess of Thailand.

From this competition one winner has gone on further to become an actual star in his country. In 2007 the winner from the 2005 Karaoke World Championship, Ari Koivunen, went on to win Idols, the Finish equivalent of the popular TV show, Pop Idols.

These events have been held all over the world, and in 2006 the finals were held aboard the M/S Galaxy whilst cruising the Baltic Sea! This year’s event will be held in the beautiful city of Stockholm, Sweden over the weekend of the 13th-15th of November, and is available to live stream from their website here, so you can see how England does in the competition, even if you can’t make it to Sweden.
